Choosing a Shape

COOLIE – EMPIRE – DRUM – CYLINDER

Selecting the right shape and size for a lamp base stays personal. If the main criterion is your personal favorite, there are lampshade shapes that are more suitable depending on the lamp base.

If you have difficulty in choosing the right shape and size lampshade, why not go to a lighting shop with your lamp base and try on different lampshade shapes and sizes and let your eyes and your imagination guide you.

Here is some advice to help you calculate the size with the shape the most suitable for your lamp base.

For a Coolie shape, the basic rule on measurements is :

  1. The bottom width of the lampshade (a) is equal to the height of the lamp base measured below the socket (b).
  2. For a larger lamp base (c), increase the bottom width of the lampshade (a).
For a more slender lamp base (c), reduce the bottom width of the lampshade (a).
Advice on measuring for harmonizing the size of a coolie shaped lampshade on a lamp base.

For Empire, Drum and Cylinder shapes
favor a smaller bottom width than for the measures taken for the Coolie shape, as the top opening of the lampshade is larger making the lampshade bigger.

CYLINDER SHAPE LAMPSHADES

All fabric prints are suitable for cylinder shape lampshades. The cylinder shape is even recommended for certain pattern-prints. Cylinder shape lampshades give a maximum of light because the top opening of the shade is larger. Images of cylinder lampshades and the positioning of the pattern-prints :
